About Project
Client: Jim Fournier
Subject: global systems narrative in interactive presentation
Period: 2001
Meta-Nature, conceived by Jim Fournier, is a narrative that situates energy technology within the context of biological evolution. Meta-Nature shows how and why our moment in history may represent a shift point at the dawn of a new phase of climax technology leading toward a plateau of long-term stability. Meta-Nature proposes that “It may be possible for the global system to undergo a change in state, a fundamental shift from one of increasingly intractable interrelated crises to one characterized by mutually reinforcing synergetic solutions.” Read more here and here and here. Jim enrolled my help to create an “S-Curve TimeMap” interactive presentation to convey key concepts of the Meta-Nature narrative. Unlike typical presentations where images change entirely in a linear sequence, this presentation allows for any element of the graphical narrative to be turned on or off at any time, thus allowing for a more dynamic and free-flow of communication.
My Task
I worked with Jim Fournier directly to translate and convey complex and historically significant concepts into a visually rich, web-based, interactiveand animated presentation (made in Flash, before PowerPoint was available).
Result
This Meta-Nature interactive Flash presentation was utilized by Jim to offer multiple presentations to conference audiences across the globe. This included a timely and potent Meta-Nature presentation on the “Challenge of Dramatically Changing the Course of Global Society” to a large group of world-class architects and change-makers at the Paradox III conference on Sustainability, Virtuality, and Community at Arcosanti, in September of 2001 (a mere week after the dramatic impact of 9/11).
